Car Health Data: turning a drive into useful diagnostic information

Car Health Data is a software platform developed by Net/Works Computer Consulting LLC to collect information from a vehicle while it is being driven, preserve that information, and make it available for review and analysis afterward.

Most drivers know that a diagnostic scanner can retrieve trouble codes. Modern vehicles can also report changing operating measurements: engine speed, coolant temperature, throttle position, fuel corrections, vehicle speed, and more. The challenge is not merely displaying those numbers, but recording how they behave together over time.

From idea to working system: Car Health Data combines Bluetooth communication, native mobile applications, a web API, relational database storage, a secure website, and tools for examining recorded driving sessions.

Why we built it

A dashboard gauge shows what is happening now. But many automotive problems appear only intermittently: during a cold start, after warm-up, under acceleration, or after an extended drive. A single snapshot can miss the pattern.

The Car Health Data project began with a straightforward question: What if we could preserve the vehicle's operating data throughout a drive and examine it afterward? That idea became a complete application, connecting a car to a phone, a server, and an analysis website.

How the system works

  1. Read the vehicle. A compatible Bluetooth OBD-II adapter connects to the car's diagnostic port and reports supported operating measurements.
  2. Collect the data on a phone. Native Android and iPhone applications communicate with the adapter and organize readings into driving sessions.
  3. Transmit and store. The application sends session data over HTTPS to a server-side API, where it is associated with the user's vehicle and stored in a database.
  4. Review the drive. The website allows users to examine recorded measurements over time rather than relying on an isolated reading.
  5. Analyze patterns. Optional AI-assisted analysis helps interpret trends such as warm-up behavior, idle stability, and charging-system performance. It supplies diagnostic context, not a guaranteed mechanical diagnosis.

The software engineering behind the product

Android and iOS applications

Native Kotlin and Swift applications handle Bluetooth communication, vehicle data polling, recording controls, and linking a phone to a user account.

Cloud API and database

A Node.js API accepts vehicle telemetry over HTTPS. MySQL stores vehicle, account, session, and measurement information for later retrieval.

Web application

Server-side PHP and browser interfaces provide account management, driving-session views, raw-data access, and analysis workflows.

Deployment and operations

The system runs on a Linux cloud server with Apache, TLS certificates, application services, and monitoring for operational and security issues.

Technologies involved: Kotlin • Swift / SwiftUI • Bluetooth Low Energy • OBD-II • Node.js • PHP • MySQL • HTTPS • Linux • Apache • AWS Lightsail

A practical example of custom software

Car Health Data illustrates the sort of work Net/Works undertakes: integrating hardware with software, designing applications across different operating systems, moving data securely between devices and servers, and making complex information useful to the person who needs it.

The project also required the less visible parts of product development: user registration, device linking, subscription access, data exports, deployment, error handling, and ongoing improvements. Those details turn a prototype into a service people can actually use.
