We setup and tune SBS
and can assist in management, backup, and disaster recovery (DR)
planning.
When fully used
this is a sophisticated and complex product, with it’s own Email server ( MS
Exchange), it’s own DNS server, its own DHCP server and of course it’s own
active directory domain controller. On the hardware side most computers
running SBS will have two network cards, one accepting data from the local
network (your worker's computers) and one sending data "upstream" to a
router or, better, a firewall. For all these reasons you should find someone
(us, of course) well familiar with the product
If you are considering
moving to SBS let us perhaps advise you
NOT to. But if you have, or are intent
upon doing so and are based anywhere on Long Island in Nassau or Suffolk we
are very well versed in this product.
As SBS servers are the only domain controllers on your network, backups
are extremely important. Backup systems needed for SBS depend solely upon
how much downtime you can tolerate. Be certain to have backup software
designed for your new mail system, MS Exchange.
At a minimum you need a standard
backup system, ideally with media for Monday to Friday, rotating of course.
You should have copies out of the building as well – perhaps rotating two
Friday copies for this reason.
What if the hard drive fails ? Or
the motherboard ? In this case the server needs rebuilding; SBS needs
reinstallation and then a restore of the backed up data. As this is a “new”
install we may need to re-create all users – this depends on the nature of
the backups. Call us for more details.
This can take some time, of
course. If you cant afford to be down a day or two, call us. There are a
variety of methods for creating systems that can either be quickly re-built
or even building in failover. Failover allows for unattended replacement on
the network of a failed server with a standby computer that has been
constantly updated from the sever - you will be down for only minutes.
